What Makes Hickstead So Special?

Hickstead was founded in 1960 by Douglas Bunn with the vision to create a world-class venue that would rival the great continental courses of Europe.

The ground is spread across a beautiful rural setting in West Sussex; the showground features multiple competition rings, with the iconic International Arena at its centre.

The Hickstead Horse Shows: A Season of World-Class Equestrian Sport

The Hickstead horse shows run across the summer months and offer something for every level of equestrian interest, from elite international competition to grassroots junior championships. Here's what's on the 2026 calendar:

The Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meeting, 18–21 June 2026

The Al Shira'aa Hickstead Derby Meeting, 18–21 June 2026

This is the main event of the Hickstead season and one of the most famous showjumping competitions in Britain.

The Hickstead Derby was first held in 1961 and is one of the most demanding classes in all of showjumping. What sets it apart from any other courses is the challenging natural terrain riders must navigate.

The course includes a fearsome 10 ft 6 Derby Bank, the notoriously tricky Devil's Dyke combination, and one of the widest water jumps in showjumping.

The Derby Meeting combines international competition with showing classes, carriage driving, a large shopping village, family entertainment and a funfair, making it every bit as enjoyable for non-equestrian visitors as it is for seasoned fans.

Hospitality options include street food and casual bars right through to fine dining overlooking the International Arena, ensuring that every visit is as relaxed or as indulgent as you want it to be.

The Royal International Horse Show brings together the very best horses and riders from across the UK and beyond.

The Al Shira'aa British Young Horse Championships, 13–16 August 2026

A key date for breeders, producers and those with an eye on the future of British equestrian sport.

The British Young Horse Championships provide a platform for promising young horses to be evaluated against the nation's best, with championship titles across multiple disciplines.
