The Market House is a typical 16th century timber-framed building, across the road from the main hotel, nestled between St Mary Magdalene & St Deny’s Church and the hotel bar.
The Market House has seen many types of visitors since the indenture (contract) was signed for it's construction in 1553, from the Midhurst Grammar School opened upstairs in 1674 (HG Wells was a former pupil) through to a Court House and an Antiques Shop in 1928. The fine herringbone brickwork is a notable feature of the building, and the Market House now houses four bright, spacious and joyously colourful bedrooms with en-suite shower facilities.
Please note these rooms are located opposite a local pub and there may be noise from the pub or road.
Upstairs: Two bedrooms and a landing, accessed by an external, open wooden staircase. These rooms (1 x double room & 1 x twin room) are popular for individuals staying for work, families with teenagers, a group of three or couples staying in Midhurst to explore. These rooms are called Cowdray & Montague - named after our landlord (the Cowdray Estate) and 1st Viscount Montague Sir Anthony Browne who was left the Cowdray Estate in 1542 by Sir William Fitzwilliam following his death and lack of direct heir. *To note these rooms are accessed by an external, open stair case - unsuitable for any guests who are unsure on their feet*.
Downstairs: Two bedrooms with a small entrance
hall which are ideal for guests travelling with dogs, couples
staying in Midhurst to explore or individuals needing to stay in
the area for work or to attend an event. These rooms are called
Rother & Arun - named after local Sussex rivers.
The four Market House rooms can be booked individually, as pairs or
as a group.
