The Chapel at Bailiffscourt

Possibly the most beautiful wedding ceremony venue in West Sussex, the Chapel at Bailiffscourt dates back to the 13th century and is licensed for ceremonies, for blessings and vows renewals.

Our name 'Bailiffscourt' is inspired by the chapel - given as gift to the Abbey of Seez in Normandy following the Norman conquest. They sent a group of monks from Northern France to ensure it was properly cared for, managed, and to act as 'bailiffs'. These Benedictine monks settled comfortably in the area but left shortly after the turn of the 14th century, when tensions were mounting with France, and sadly the chapel fell into disrepair. Fast forward to the more dazzling world of the roaring 1920's and the Chapel was painstakingly restored by Amya Phillips during the Guinness family ownership of the estate.

Today it is the ultimate wedding venue. Take your vows surrounded by friends and family in a flower and candle filled setting. Perfect for up to 40 guests, (seated) and up to 65 guests, (seated and standing).

Wedding Ceremony Spaces

In addition to our stunning 13th century Chapel we have several other locations that are licensed for wedding ceremonies including:

Outdoor Ceremonies - we have five outdoor areas licensed for outdoor wedding ceremonies for up to 65 guests: Rose Garden, Courtyard, Chapel Lawn, Gazebo, Helipad which can be used when booking the hotel on an exclusive use basis (see below). We do recommend keeping the great British weather in mind when considering an outdoor wedding ceremony.

The Card Room - licensed for up to 8 guests for a perfectly intimate wedding ceremony. The Card Room is a pretty room, with an unusual decorative ceiling, wood panelled walls and is ideal for two to eight guests.

The Music Room - a charming room, full of character and medieval in style with triple aspect, mullioned windows overlooking our grounds. With an open fireplace and tapestries hung from the walls, this room is particularly beautiful when filled with flowers and candles. The Music Room is licensed for up to 65 guests for a wedding ceremony or blessing (seated and standing). And for up to 40 guests (seated).

Bailiffscourt can be booked for exclusive use, for one night, a week-end or a whole week giving you, your family and friends a private house to celebrate and party in style, and with the opportunity to dress or style the hotel to create the wedding of your dreams.

Stunning dining spaces

From a vintage afternoon tea, to delicious light canapés with a glass of Sussex wine, a lavish four course dinner or a relaxed hog roast the menu for your wedding reception will be outstanding.

After your ceremony in The Chapel we suggest The Music Room for your wedding breakfast (for up to 40 guests), or in the Restaurant (for up to 65 guests)

For small ceremonies in The Card Room we suggest The Lightwell for your wedding breakfast. Set off our main restaurant, The Lightwell is a delightful and light room, or you may simply prefer to book a table in the restaurant.

The Music Room can be used for both your ceremony and wedding breakfast, with reception drinks either in the rose garden, courtyard or lounges while we reset the room.

We believe one of the key components of delicious menus is the use of the finest, locally sourced ingredients and you will find our menus packed with the Flavours of Sussex.
